2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9
Hyundai is one step closer to its goal of an all-electric, 23-vehicle lineup by 2030 with the debut
of the IONIQ 9, a fully electric, three-row SUV. With a host of newly introduced interior features
and technologies, this exciting EV raises the bar for future Hyundai models. Its completely flat
floor allows for expansive passenger space for up to seven on trims S through SEL. And even when all
of the seats are full, everyone still has room for their possessions, thanks to 21.9 cubic feet of
cargo space behind the third row (and approximately 46.7 cubic feet when it’s folded down) and the
under-hood front trunk for additional storage.
The first and second rows have Relaxation
Seats that are equipped with leg rests and can fully recline; plus, they have Hyundai’s first-ever
Dynamic Body Care system, which has a Dynamic Touch Massage to help with blood flow and circulation
on extended trips. The second row has swiveling seats so passengers can turn around and face the
occupants in the third row when the vehicle is stopped. One of the more exciting (and useful)
features is the Universal Island 2.0, a movable center console in the second row that allows
passengers to easily pass through to the front, while also providing two levels of convenient
storage.
As Hyundai’s electric lineup continues to grow, its technologies are also evolving.
The 2026 IONIQ 9 has a revamped EV Route Planner that optimizes navigation for EV-specific routes
for the highest efficiency. Hyundai has also enhanced the battery consistency to deliver a more
stable performance, while a new feature called advanced torque control display will provide
real-time visualization of the vehicle’s power distribution. Finally, the comprehensive energy
report feature improves the ownership experience by offering detailed insights into energy
consumption to help drivers stay more informed and make helpful adjustments.
Mechanical Details, Range, and Charging
The ‘26 IONIQ 9 lineup consists of six trims: S, SE, SEL, Limited, Calligraphy, and Calligraphy Design.
The electric powertrain choices include single-motor Long-Range RWD (160 kW rear motor), dual-motor
Long-Range AWD (66.1 kW front motor/160 kW rear motor), and dual-motor Performance AWD (157.3 kW
motors). Each driveline employs a high-voltage battery and a single-speed reduction gear transmission.
The Long-Range RWD can generate 215 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, and it has a towing capacity
of up to 3,500 pounds with trailer brakes. The Long-Range AWD has a maximum output of 303 horsepower and
446 lb.-ft. of torque, while the Performance AWD can produce 422 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque,
and both AWD systems can tow up to 5,000 pounds with trailer brakes.
The S has the best driving
range at 335 miles, and it returns an estimated 103 MPGe in the city and 81 MPGe on the highway. The SE
and SEL provide a 320-mile driving range, and city/highway ratings are estimated at 98 MPGe city/78 MPGe
highway. At the top end of the lineup, the Limited and above achieve a 311-mile driving range, along
with estimated city/highway ratings of 91 MPGe city/79 MPGe highway.
Although charging time will
depend on various factors, the DC fast charging estimates come in at 109 minutes (50 kW), 41 minutes
(NACS V3 Supercharger), and 24 minutes (350 kW) — each restoring battery life from 10 to 80 percent. For
the everyday, at-home scenario, AC Level 2 charging via a 240-volt power source takes the IONIQ 9 from
10 to 80 percent in approximately 9 hours and 40 minutes.
Standard Equipment
The S is well appointed with stain-resistant upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front
seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, wireless device charging, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster,
seven USB ports (front row: three/second row: two/third row: two), two 12-volt power outlets, and
dual-zone automatic climate control with second-row controls and vents in all three rows. Its exterior
is equipped with full LED lighting (automatic projector headlights, daytime running lights, taillights,
center stop lamp, and rear spoiler light bar) rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate, heated
side mirrors with LED turn indicators, rooftop side rails, 19-inch alloy wheels, flush door handles,
proximity key, and remote release for the hood, charge door, and liftgate.
The SE moves up to
20-inch alloy wheels and gains an 8-way power passenger’s seat, while the SEL is upgraded with synthetic
leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, premium doorsill
plates, ambient cabin lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, power-folding side
mirrors, and 21-inch alloy wheels. The Limited comes with 5-spoke, 21-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic
sunroof, Vehicle-to-Load technology (which allows the vehicle’s battery to be used as a power source for
external electric devices as well as to charge other EVs), memory settings for the driver’s seat, a
power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a sliding front center console, ventilated second-row
captain’s chairs with 4-way power adjustment, and a power-folding third row. The Calligraphy adds
microfiber suede roof trim, unique front and rear bumpers, a premium cargo sill plate, a 10-inch head-up
display, and the Full Display Mirror, an advanced rearview mirror system which utilizes a rear-mounted
camera to provide a live video feed and expanded visibility. The Calligraphy Design is an
appearance-focused grade that has 21-inch alloy wheels with Turbine Design, signature trim accents, and
two exclusive paint colors: Gravity Gold Matte and Sage Silver Matte.
Safety Technologies
The ‘26 IONIQ 9 prioritizes safety with a wealth of both active and passive safety features. With 10
airbags throughout the cabin, it offers comprehensive occupant protection, while third-row passengers
benefit from standard seat belt pretensioners and load limiters, which reduce head and neck injury in
the event of a collision. Hyundai SmartSense comes standard, consisting of high beam assist, highway
driving assist, smart cruise control, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, driver attention warning,
lane following and lane keeping assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, parking distance
warning (forward/reverse), safe exit assist, advanced rear occupant alert, forward attention warning,
and forward collision-avoidance assist with evasive steering and detection of car/pedestrian/cyclist,
oncoming lane changes, lane changes from the side, and junction turning/crossing.
The SEL adds a
surround view monitor, blind-spot view monitor, parking collision-avoidance assist (reverse), and side
detection capability for the parking distance warning. The Calligraphy and Calligraphy Design are fully
loaded with the addition of Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 and parking collision-avoidance assist with
side detection.
Connectivity and Multimedia
Those who love to have the latest technology will appreciate the array in the ‘26 IONIQ 9. The standard multimedia setup includes a 12.3-inch color touchscreen with onboard navigation, wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The software is updated via over-the-air updates, and owners with compatible smartphones have access to Bluelink connected car services. The Limited and above get a 14-speaker Bose premium audio system with e-Active Sound Design technology.
