The SEL trim is equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder base engine providing 185 horsepower, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain earns an EPA-estimated 25 city/35 highway miles per gallon. Two engine upgrades are available, including the Eco for those who want better fuel economy. This 178-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder offers 28/37 city/highway miles per gallon. If more power is your priority, you can upgrade any of the trims with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a combo that offers 295 horses. This powertrain comes standard in the Limited 2.0T.
Technology
All trims of the Sonata are equipped with the latest in high-tech comfort and convenience features. The SE includes a seven-inch touchscreen display with seamless smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bluetooth and USB are also standard equipment, as is Hyundai's BlueLink infotainment system. The Limited and Limited 2.0T add power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium stereo system with satellite radio, a larger 8-inch touchscreen, heated steering wheel, and wireless charging.
Safety
The 2018 Sonata has earned a five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, the highest possible score. Driver assistance equipment is included at every trim; the SE model is equipped with a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane change assist. The Limited models include all that plus lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors. Optional safety features include adaptive cruise control and pedestrian detection.
