The 2018 Hyundai Sonata has a totally new look. Its new curb appeal goes more than sheet metal deep with more features and a sleeker interior. The new Sonata definitely deserves a closer look.

Designers made the hood look longer when they added a new front fascia and new air inlets. More significantly, the trapezoidal grille has been replaced by a taller, narrower one. The back has been reworked as well. Reviewers, such as Edmunds and Motor Trend, are applauding the changes.

Performance

Engineers improved the Sonata's handling and fine-tuned the suspension. Drivers should notice greater responsiveness, and passengers may notice a smoother ride. For certain sport models, Hyundai engineers have replaced the old six-speed automatic with an eight speed. As you can imagine, more gears ensure more precision. Three engine choices appeal to different types of drivers. The main engine is a 185-horsepower unit. Standard on the first four trims, it generates 178 lb.-ft. of torque. An alternative is the Eco edition with its 178-horsepower turbo with 195 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.0T models have a 245-horsepower turbo. This kicks torque up to 260 lb.-ft.

Interior

Sonatas have become known for their spacious interiors. According to EPA measurements, the midsized Sonata is big enough to be called a large car. The new models will offer fine quality materials in an updated design. Shoppers can get premium amenities at a lower price. Depending on the trim, you will find power-adjusting seats with driver memory settings. These may have power-heat and power-ventilation. Backseat riders will appreciate the available side sunshades and rear venting. Premium touches dress the interior in leather. A sporty D-cut steering wheel with bolstered seats and aluminum pedals look right at home in the Sport model. The available hands-free smart trunk is a favorite with busy people everywhere. Unlike some midsized sedans, the Sonata's trunk is plenty big enough for your vacation luggage.

Features

Technology features have expanded with the 2018 edition. The seven-inch touch display can do more with Bluetooth audio streaming due to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hyundai is adding more navigation capability to the larger 8-inch touchscreen system. More equipment is also on board, including a wireless charging pad and backseat USB ports. Amazon Echo can be paired with Blue Link. This allows owners to use an Amazon device to control certain car functions remotely.

Safety

For 2018, Sonatas are becoming even safer. A blind spot monitor and its partner, a rear cross-traffic alert, will become standard on the SE trim. A lane change assist will react when you turn on your blinker, and a car is in the corresponding lane. The exclusive dynamic bending lights can adjust light to suit your car's trajectory. On the top trim, a lane departure warning is paired with an assist feature. Automatic emergency braking can protect the vehicle when the driver can't respond quickly enough to a forward collision alert. A start-stop feature makes the adaptive cruise control even more useful.
