Although it was a rough few years after the Hyundai Sonata debuted in 1985, it has slowly but surely risen to become one of the top choices in the midsize sedan market. For the 2017 and 2018 model years, the nameplate asserts its reputation as a spacious, safe, and efficient vehicle loaded with lots of features and backed by one of the most generous warranties in the market.

Interior Space

As a five-seater, the Hyundai Sonata—either in its 2017 or 2018 incarnation—is particularly roomy, one of the best in the midsize sedan class. Passenger volume is measured at 106.1 cubic feet, which is more than enough to keep all occupants cozy. Behind the bench-style rear seat is 16.3 cubic feet to store your luggage. And since the rear row is foldable, you can do so to expand the amount of cargo space into the cabin itself.

Fuel Efficiency

The Hyundai Sonata is also outstanding in gas mileage. To maximize efficiency on the vehicle, go with the Eco trim, which has a unique powertrain configuration. It is the only Sonata model to have the G4FJ (which is a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine) and the 7-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. The G4FJ is tiny, and thus perfect for being miserly on fuel consumption. And with the ability to go between the convenience of automation and greater control of gear shifting, the EcoShift manages energy conservation. As a result, the Sonata Eco produces the best numbers on the nameplate: 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Those are rare numbers in the midsize sedan segment. Other vehicles, like the Accord, would need to go with a continuously variable transmission—which does away with the energy-consuming gear shifting mechanism of traditional transmissions—to catch up to those numbers.

Safety

Overall, the 2017/2018 Hyundai Sonata is considered one of the safer vehicles in the midsize sedan class. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) names the Sonata a “Top Safety Pick” vehicle. This is due to the sedan getting the best possible score (“Good”) on all categories of the IIHS’s crashworthiness tests, as well as the best possible score (“Superior”) in front crash prevention. The front crash prevention rating is due to the availability of advanced available safety features, such as automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, and smart cruise control with stop/start capability. Also impressed with the Sonata’s crash safety test performances is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, which awards the vehicle a perfect overall rating of 5 stars.
