Both the 2018 Hyundai Sonata and the 2018 Toyota Camry are excellent midsize sedans, and represent two of the best of what the crowded segment has to offer. It also helps that each car gets a boost from major updates; the Sonata got a face lift midway through its seventh production cycle, while the Camry is kicking off its eighth. More impressive though, is the Sonata, which, for two decades after its debut, wasn’t considered as a strong offering in the midsize sedan market. But now, for the 2018 model year, it can boast of a trio of advantages it has over one of the perennial heavyweights of the segment.

Fuel Economy

The Hyundai Sonata is universally praised for its outstanding fuel economy numbers, which peak at 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Credit that to the unique powertrain configuration that the aptly named Eco trim has. It’s the only Sonata variant that pairs a 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine with the 7-speed EcoShift dual clutch transmission. The I4 is small enough to avoid being a gas guzzler, while providing enough output (178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque). And the EcoShift gearbox, with its one clutch for odd-numbered gears and the other for even-numbered gears, provides smooth acceleration by the avoiding shift shocks common with manual transmissions while maintaining the convenient operation of an automatic one, thus conserving energy. Although Toyota promises improved fuel efficiency with its brand-new 2.5 I4 (A25A-FKS), it remains to be seen if it bests its current peak numbers, which, at 24/33 mpg, is 4 less mpg in city fuel economy and 3 less mpg in highway fuel economy than what the Sonata provides.

Front Crash Prevention

The Hyundai Sonata and the Toyota Camry are singled out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for “Top Safety Pick” recognition. This is mainly due to scoring the best possible rating (“Good”) on every crashworthiness test that the organization administers. Also, each car does well on the Crash Avoidance & Mitigation test, which the IIHS uses to measure their ability to prevent front crashes based on the availability of certain advanced safety features. The Sonata gets the highest-level rating of “Superior” in this test, thanks to available advanced safety features like smart cruise control, automatic emergency braking, dynamic bending light technology, and automatic high beam assist. The Camry is rated a notch lower, at “Advanced,” which is still good, but not as good as the Sonata.

Blue Link

Unique to the Hyundai Sonata is Blue Link, a telematics system that includes a suite of car functions and services that includes remote access, stolen vehicle recovery, automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, service scheduling ability, and the provision of a vehicle health report on a monthly basis. And for 2018, Hyundai upgraded the system for compatibility with Amazon Echo and Google Home devices.
